Reading Camera Lucida by Barthes

In my temporary dorm room reading Barthes. On Page 35 is a photograph by R. Avedon entitled: William Casby, Born a Slave. 1963.

It is the most striking image I have ever seen.

Brown Library 7:26 on Wednesday Night

Looking up books. Checking them out. Going to find out which ones are naughty or nice. Laura is writing her dissertation today.

The Beginnings

I was... no, I am... having a difficult time deciding on a topic that I want to work on the for the next few years of my life. Margo, the director said for me to start free-form writing. Well, I closed my eyes and started typing... The first thing that came out of my fingers was just bizarre. Absolutely the strangest story of my childhood. Something I had not thought of in years. Next, I started writing about why I liked faces. I will post later. Anyway, that conversation with myself lead me down a path I had not expected.

Last night, I worked on cleaning up the bizarre story, and figuring out why and what I had written. And where if any where it could take me. I think it worked out. I presented the first draft of my dissertation proposal today. It could have gone better, but overall I think it was a success.

I had turned the document in late due to putting the finishing up touches on an Independent Study paper that was also late. Regardless, I presented an argument today. I need to reevaluate and represent on Monday, so this Brown University dorm room will be happily occupied.
